NSW Seniors Week Festival will be observed from 12 – 23 February 2020. Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) provides affordable physical activity options for seniors in your Council area. These physical activity classes are part of the District’s focus on healthy, active ageing and wellbeing. Research shows that exercise at any age has many benefits. Regular physical activity can assist to improve strength and balance, decrease risk factors for chronic health conditions, improve mental health and importantly for seniors help to reduce falls and maintain independence. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older people with more than one in three people aged 65 years and over falling at least once a year.
The MLHD offers the following low cost programs to help seniors to remain active
Evidence informed, low-cost physical activity classes for older people in the community. Over 110 trained volunteers lead aqua, gentle exercise and tai chi classes across 42 towns and 22 local government areas in the District.
The Stepping On falls prevention program in over 20 community health facilities. This 7 week, evidence informed program, led by trained health professionals, is for those members of the community who are fearful of falling. Stepping On consists of simple
strength and balance exercises in addition to presentations from a range of local health providers.
