Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) Youth & Inclusion Officer Destini Warren has been busy with Youth activities over the last few months and 2024 is ramping up to be another busy and fruitful year for the regions young people.

The Youth Councils in Cootamundra and Gundagai have welcomed some new members and there is still room for more. The CYC and GYC youth have responsibilities which include attending meetings, running youth events, and helping at community events. Setting themselves up with leadership, organisational and financial skills, marketing, and future employment prospects. The Youth Councils also offer peer group support and opportunities to connect with likeminded people.

 School Holiday programs have included:

  • Twilight basketball in Cootamundra.
  • CrossFit Comp in Cootamundra.
  • Outdoor movie nights in Cootamundra and Gundagai.
  • Multisport day in Gundagai.
  • African Drum Workshops in Cootamundra and Gundagai.
  • Reptiles on the Go in Cootamundra and Gundagai.
  • Skate workshop Gundagai.
  • Skate workshop and competition Cootamundra.

All events were well attended with participants enjoying the range of free activities on offer.

The Youth & Inclusion Officer and Youth Councils will continue to run school holiday activities that are free or low cost over the 2024 school holiday periods.

CGRC has invested in the regions youth by establishing Youth Hubs in Cootamundra and Gundagai.

The Cootamundra Youth Hub is located at the Old Hospital on the corner of Mackay and Thompson Street. The Gundagai Youth Hub is located at the Netball courts in Sheridan Lane and mirrors the facilities available in the Cootamundra Youth Hub.

The newly renovated spaces have seen new carpets, painting, furnishings and new air conditioning systems installed.

Both Youth Hubs in Cootamundra and Gundagai house facilities and areas for young people to enjoy and mix, these include:

  • Fuse ball table
  • Television
  • Computers with Wi-Fi for gaming or homework
  • Study area
  • Books
  • Kitchenette
  • Switch

The Youth Hubs are spaces for Youth aged 12-18 to come and relax, study, and hang out. The Hubs will also be used for school holiday events and will open some school days after school and some full days during school holidays and on some weekends. Opening details will be in published in March, and advertised through local schools, CYC & GYC Facebook pages, CGRC website and Community Newsletter.

CGRC encourages young people to either contact the Youth & Inclusion officer, speak to the CYC or GYC members, engage with the respective Facebook pages and get involved in youth activities to ensure that Council can continue to improve on youth facilities and wellbeing.

Cootamundra Youth and Police enjoyed a Skate Workshop and competition in Cootamundra, with deputy mayor Councillor Gil Kelly in attendance and assisting with the judging of the skate competition.

The CrossFit competition in Cootamundra also attracted a host of competitors, vying for prizes in the Youth versus Emergency Services/Teachers competition. They young people took out the prize on the day winning the overall competition.
