Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) is committed to the visitor experience across the LGA, providing a number of tourist attractions and supporting local organisations who are involved in the promotion, restoration and preservation of our region’s history and chronicles of our communities.
Attractions like the Bradman Birthplace Museum, the Old Gundagai Gaol, the Captains Walk, The Dog on the Tuckerbox and the magnificent Rusconi Marble Masterpiece are just a few of the attractions that see hundreds of “out of towners” visit on a daily basis.
CGRC Mayor Abb McAlister said he would like to see more locals, drop by these and other places of interest.
“As community members, we are our best advocates for promoting tourism and lauding our regions highlights and history. However there seems to be a real lack of local knowledge especially amongst our younger generations. They are missing out on so much. The history of our region and how we have forged our communities from the harshest conditions to what they are today, the stories are amazing, and we should all be very proud of where we’ve been and what we have become.
I’d like to urge all, young and old to check out our museums, take a walk around your communities and really look at the different attractions and learn about the region and the community you live in. We have songs written about our communities. John Williamson’s Cootamundra Wattle and Jack O’Hagan’s Along the Road to Gundagai and Jack Moses’ Nine Miles from Gundagai. Poems such as Francis Duggan’s, Cootamundra Wattle and Banjo Patterson’s On the Road to Gundagai and famous and infamous characters from the past. Yarri & Jacky Jacky, King Billy (Jimmy Clements), Richard Hunt, Captain Moonlite and James Nesbitt, Sir Donald Bradman, George Dempsey, Reg Devine, Jack Kingston These are all aspects and people that make our region unique,” Cr McAlister said.
For local people looking for more information on local attractions visit the Gundagai Visitor Information Centre in Sheridan Street or the Cootamundra Visitors Information Centre at the Heritage Centre in Hovell Street Cootamundra.
