The major upgrade of Cootamundra’s heavy vehicle bypass road, Hovell Street has been delivered on time, on budget and has made a significant impact on the quality of the road surface from the Campbell and Cowcumbla Streets section.

The project had been identified as a critical thoroughfare for heavy vehicle movements within Cootamundra. Traffic flow data along the street 23,000 cars and 1300 heavy vehicles per month.

The roadworks commenced in March 2025 and was expected to be completed by 30 June 2025. Despite a small holdup due to weather, the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC), Acting Manager Engineering Services – Cootamundra, Mr Dominic Lucas said he was pleased with the progress of the work the project being completed ahead of time, the quality of the work and the project being completed within budget.

“Council teams involved in the project worked well with the various specialist sub-contractors to make the project happen, including public utility location, geotechnical engineers, kerb and gutter construction and asphalt laying. The rehabilitation of this heavy vehicle bypass road was always going to cause some disruption to residents, businesses and customers, so I would like to thank those affected for their patience and understanding,” Mr Lucas said.

The pavement along this section of Hovell Street was upgraded to 100-year design life which has been found to be three times more cost effective over the long term. The project has been fully funded by the NSW Government under the Fixing Local Roads Round 4 program at a cost of $1.8M.

CGRC mayor Councillor Abb McAlister said the upgrade will make the road surface safer for all motorists using the street.

This street sees a large volume of heavy vehicles and the surface had deteriorated considerably over time. This upgrade will not only address maintenance concerns, it will also address drainage issues and will save ratepayers money over the long term with reduced maintenance addressed in its design,” Councillor McAlister said.
