Residents in Cootamundra and Gundagai may have noticed two significant landmarks in their towns illumined in an orange glow from Friday of last week.
Cootamundra’s Cenotaph in Albert Park and Gundagai’s Dad, Dave & Mabel Statue in Carberry Park were unlit to mark The Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF), Fatality Free Friday initiative.
The ARSF message is more pressing than ever. In 2024 alone, 1306 lives were lost on Australian roads, this is a 3.8% increase on the previous year, a statement from ARSF said.
Fatality Free Friday (30 May) and beyond, calling on all road users to prevent time from stopping for more families due to preventable road tragedies.
Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) supported the initiative with email banners with the message about the initiative and a message: The keys to road safety are in all our hands. The banners ran on all CGRC email messages for the month of May. Along with the lighting up of Cootamundra’s Cenotaph and the Gundagai statues it was anticipated that a road safety message reminding all to take responsibility on our roads will reach people and make a difference.
