Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) resolved at Tuesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting to contribute $5,000 to the CGRC Muttama Hall Section 355 committee to undertake celebrations marking the 100-year centenary of the Hall.

The big weekend at Muttama will be held on 17 and 18 May 2025, with a weekend of history displays, stalls, barbeques, hot air balloon, time capsule and vintage machinery displays. A centenary dinner will be held on Saturday 17 May from 6pm, whilst Sunday 18 May will see a family fun day from 11am.

Funds will be utilised from the Community Events budget to mark a weekend of reflection and celebration for the village hall. The committee on behalf of Council are currently organising historic maps and other memorabilia to be on display. Invitations are being issued to former Muttama residents and will be open for all residents to attend and enjoy the history and atmosphere that will be in abundance surrounding the historic hall.

CGRC Mayor Abb McAlister said he was looking forward to the event and congratulated the committee on their efforts.

“These village halls have played such a huge part in the history of our communities. The Muttama Hall s355 committee work extremely hard to ensure the hall will continue to play a part in Muttama’s history. I’m delighted the committee have taken up the centenary project to celebrate and share this historic hall’s past,” Cr McAlister said.

The area around Muttama is famed for the discovery of gold at Muttama Reef in the 1860’s, with the Muttama post office opening in 1876. The Muttama Hall was opened in May 1925, to provide a venue for meetings, social, commemorative and national remembrance events. With construction funded by a bank loan guaranteed by locals. The hall houses the Muttama World War I Roll of Honour and the Muttama World War II Roll of Honour boards. A plaque in the hall honours Allan and Paul Rolles who were members of the Muttama Fire Brigade and lost their living in the January bushfire of 1987.
