Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) has been seeking permits to work in Muttama Creek at Cootamundra. As per the requirements of the Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) CGRC has applied for permits to undertake works at council structures (e.g., causeways, bridges etc.) along Muttama Creek to remove vegetation and undertake excavation of some material within 10m upstream and downstream from the creek at specific locations. The department Crown Lands was also involved in the permit approvals.
Over the last few months Council has been inspecting the creek and has removed a large number of shopping trolleys, garbage, and numerous exotic trees. While this work has been in progress, Council has been in talks with the relevant Government departments and seeking permits to undertake further work in the creek.
Undertaking this work will be under strict permit approvals which include working at times of minimal water flow and with placement of erosion and sediment protection measures.
Council expects to commence work on and near the causeways at Hovell, Thompson, Poole Streets and Cutler Avenue and the Mackay, Parker and Wallendoon Street bridges in the week beginning 28 August, subject to weather and creek flows.
