Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council’s (CGRC), Cr Charlie Sheahan, mayor, and Glen McAtear, Council’s Manager Regulatory and Emergency Management Officer attended the Southern Cross Care Cootamundra in Scott Street after an overnight fire.

Upon speaking with Management, they were advised that 11 patients from the Dementia Wing were evacuated. An assessment on the damage is being undertaken with some rehousing required for some of the residents. It is believed those residents will be catered for by the Cootamundra Nursing Home – ADINA CARE.

Mayor Sheahan commended the actions of the Southern Cross Care staff in attendance at the facility at the time of the fire stating “Their actions were outstanding during the emergency. The commitment to the provision of care and safety of the affected residents being first and foremost in guiding their response.”

Mayor Sheahan also commended the Cootamundra Fire Brigade’s response, “They arrived at the scene promptly which minimised the damage to the buildings and assisted with the evacuation of residents. They are a credit to the people in the community of Cootamundra and surrounds.”

Mayor Sheahan has offered the assistance of Council where practicable.
