The campaign to retain pathology services at Cootamundra Hospital has been successful, following an announcement by the NSW Health Minister, The Hon. Ryan Park MP, on Thursday, 8 May 2025.

Widespread public support — including a petition launched by Steph Cooke MP, Member for Cootamundra, which attracted more than 10,000 signatures — has led to the service being maintained.

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) Mayor, Cr Abb McAlister, was among the local leaders actively lobbying for the service to remain in town.

“People power has made this campaign a success, and I thank everyone who supported it,” Cr McAlister said. “Without the combined efforts of so many, we would have lost this essential service.”

Cr McAlister also rejected the alternative proposal to move laboratory services to Young.

“That was not an acceptable solution for our community. The overwhelming support across the electorate — including from people outside our LGA — shows just how critical this service is. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone who signed the petition.”

The Mayor also acknowledged the vital role played by the local Member.

“Steph Cooke has fought hard for her electorate. This service is not only vital to Cootamundra but supports other hospitals as well. Her leadership and persistence have been instrumental in securing this win for the region.
