Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council is pleased to announce the reopening of the refurbished Mackay Park public amenities in Wallendbeen, improving the presentation, cleanliness and long-term durability of this important community facility.
The upgrade included a comprehensive refresh of the amenities, with removal and replacement of tiling, pressure washing, repainting of walls, doors and roof trusses, installation of new sinks, and the application of a durable epoxy coating to the floors. Bird spikes were also installed to prevent nesting and reduce ongoing maintenance issues.
The project was delivered at a cost of approximately $17,500 and was funded through Transport for NSW, as the site is a designated rest stop. Works were undertaken in response to the poor condition of the existing facility, with the upgrade expected to extend the life of the amenities by around 10 years.
While signage was installed to notify the community of temporary closures during the works, the site was unfortunately accessed prematurely by a member of the public. This resulted in damage to the newly applied epoxy flooring before it had fully cured, leaving permanent marks. Council reminds residents of the importance of observing temporary closures to ensure upgrades can be completed to the highest possible standard.
The timing of the works was influenced by contractor availability, funding deadlines prior to 30 June, and seasonal weather considerations.
Further improvements are planned for the surrounding area, with new garden edging already installed and Parks staff set to establish low-maintenance plantings in the coming weeks.
At this stage, no additional funding has been allocated for further public toilet upgrades across the region. However, Council has identified Bradman Oval as a priority for future investment should funding opportunities arise.
