Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) is calling on residents to take simple but meaningful steps to strengthen recycling efforts across the region, highlighting the environmental, economic, and community benefits of reducing waste.
Mayor Abb McAlister said recycling is one of the most practical ways residents can contribute to protecting the local environment and preserving natural resources for future generations.
“Recycling is something every household can do to make a real difference,” Mayor McAlister said. “By correctly sorting recyclable materials and reducing contamination in our bins, we help conserve valuable resources, reduce landfill use, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.”
When recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, glass bottles, aluminium cans, and certain plastics are diverted from landfill, they can be reprocessed into new products. This reduces the need for raw material extraction, saves energy, and supports jobs within the recycling and manufacturing industries.
Landfill waste produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By improving recycling practices across the CGRC region, the community can reduce emissions while extending the lifespan of local waste facilities.
Mayor McAlister also encouraged residents to be mindful of contamination in yellow-lidded recycling bins.
“Putting the right items in the right bin ensures our recycling system works effectively and efficiently. A small effort at home makes a significant impact across the entire region,” he said.
CGRC remains committed to promoting sustainable waste management practices and providing clear guidance to residents on what can and cannot be recycled.
Residents are encouraged to visit Council’s website or contact CGRC directly for information about local recycling services and waste collection guidelines.
