Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) will recognise the National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Bondi terror attack, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Council was contacted by the Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke MP, who requested all councils advise whether they would participate in the national observance.

As a mark of respect, CGRC will fly flags at half-mast on Thursday, 22 January 2026.

Mayor Abb McAlister said he hoped residents across the region would take time on the day to reflect on the significance of the national mourning.

“The Prime Minister has announced the theme for the day as ‘Light Will Win’, representing a gathering of unity and remembrance,” Mayor McAlister said.

“While Bondi may be geographically distant from our region, the horror of that day has impacted us all. Regardless of race, creed or culture, we are a region that embraces diversity, and this senseless act of violence against innocent people has no place in our society.”

CGRC encourages community members to observe the day in a manner meaningful to them and to reflect on the values of compassion, unity and resilience.
