Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council will celebrate NAIDOC week this year with a variety of events across both towns.

The theme in 2018 is Because of Her We Can! The theme celebrates the essential role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played – and continue to play – as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, rights to country, for law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate the culture, language, music and art.

NAIDOC Week 2018 will is held nationally from Sunday 8 July and continues through to Sunday 15 July.

Gundagai will mark the week with church services, flag raising ceremonies, traditional cooking, morning teas, craft displays and a family fun day in Yarri Park on Thursday 12th July.

Cootamundra residents can listen to the stories of inspirational women, and have a yarn over morning tea at The Wiradjuri Windows in the Cootamundra Town Hall from 10am on Friday 13th July.

CGRC mayor Cr Abb McAlister invited all members of the community to attend.

“We hope as many members of our communities can come along and help celebrate this national event, Please join us to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the significant contributions they have made to our communities,” Cr McAlister said.
